Austria Gross-to-Net Salary Calculator 2026: How Much Remains?

How much remains from a gross salary in Austria? Employees have two main deductions: social insurance contributions and wage income tax (Lohnsteuer). Austria also commonly pays 14 salaries each year, with the 13th and 14th payments (Urlaubsgeld, Weihnachtsgeld) taxed at preferential rates. The information below uses the official 2026 figures to explain estimated monthly and annual net pay.

Enter your monthly gross salary in the calculator. You can also include whether you have a child under 18 or commute to work, because the Familienbonus Plus and Pendlerpauschale can reduce your tax.

Social insurance contributions in 2026

In 2026, employees pay 18.07 percent of their gross salary in social insurance contributions. This consists of:

In Vienna, the employee share of the housing construction contribution is higher from 1 January 2026: 0.75 percent. The total deduction there is therefore 18.32 percent.

Employees on lower salaries pay less unemployment insurance. In 2026, there is no AV contribution up to a monthly gross salary of 2,225 euros. The rate is 1 percent between 2,225 and 2,427 euros, 2 percent between 2,427 and 2,630 euros, and the full 2.95 percent above that.

Contributions are calculated up to a maximum monthly salary of 6,930 euros (Höchstbeitragsgrundlage). No contributions are due on the part above this amount. Employees do not pay contributions on monthly earnings up to 551.10 euros (Geringfügigkeitsgrenze).

Wage income tax in 2026

Income tax is calculated on the salary remaining after social insurance contributions, according to the annual tax tariff. In 2026, the first 13,539 euros are tax-free. The following bands are taxed at 20, 30, 40, 48, 50 and 55 percent. The detailed bands are explained in the income tax article, which also includes its own calculator.

Every employee receives the Verkehrsabsetzbetrag, worth 496 euros per year in 2026, which directly reduces tax. A flat-rate allowance of 132 euros per year for work-related expenses (Werbungskostenpauschale) is also granted and deducted automatically from the salary calculation. For lower incomes, the Verkehrsabsetzbetrag is increased by up to 804 euros per year, but this additional amount is received only through the annual tax assessment (Arbeitnehmerveranlagung).

How are the 13th and 14th payments taxed?

The summer and Christmas payments (Sonderzahlungen) have lower social insurance contributions because they do not include the Chamber of Labour and housing construction contributions. The rate is therefore 17.07 percent. Tax is also preferential: after social insurance has been deducted, the first 620 euros are tax-free and the next 24,380 euros are taxed at 6 percent.

If one sixth of the annual regular salary (Jahressechstel) does not exceed 2,615 euros, the special payments are not taxed at all. This is why the net 13th and 14th payments are usually higher than the regular monthly net salary.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there 14 salaries in Austria?

The summer and Christmas special payments added to the 12 regular monthly salaries (Urlaubszuschuss, Weihnachtsremuneration) are generally provided for by collective agreements (Kollektivvertrag), not by tax law. The exact rule is set out in your employment contract and the collective agreement that applies to you.

How accurate is the calculator?

The calculator provides an estimate for a full-time employee with the same salary throughout the year. The amount on your payslip may differ by a few euros because of overtime, supplements, starting work during the year or individual tax credits. Your payslip (Lohnzettel) shows the exact amount.

What is the net salary from 3,000 euros gross?

In 2026, outside Vienna, with no children and no commuting allowance, the estimated regular monthly net salary is about 2,174 euros. The 13th and 14th payments are each approximately 2,357 euros net.
