Pensioner Discounts in Austria by Federal State (2026)

Pensioners in Austria may qualify for national discounts as well as support offered by individual federal states and cities. Some benefits depend on age, while others are based on household income. This overview covers key options available in 2026.
In brief:
- Every pensioner with a domestic residence automatically receives a Pensionistenausweis free of charge.
- The ÖBB Vorteilscard Senior costs 31 euros per year from age 65 and is free with Ausgleichszulage.
- The KlimaTicket Ö costs 1050 euros for people over 65 from 1 January 2026.
- Heizkostenzuschuss varies by federal state: 250 euros in Salzburg and 150 euros in Lower Austria for the 2025/2026 heating season.
- This is an overview and is not a complete list.
National benefits for pensioners
The Pensionistenausweis is issued by the pension insurance provider, Pensionsversicherung (PV). New pensioners receive it in January together with the letter about the pension increase. It is the size of a bank card. Anyone who retires during the year initially receives a paper card.
The card is valid only together with photo identification and can provide discounts for admission and travel. It is valid indefinitely unless the pension itself is granted for a limited period.
Transport discounts in 2026
- ÖBB Vorteilscard Senior: available from age 65 for 31 euros per year.
- Vorteilscard Senior with Ausgleichszulage: free from age 65.
- KlimaTicket Ö (Senior): 1050 euros from age 65.
You do not need a photograph for the Vorteilscard. When travelling, however, carry photo identification confirming your age. The free version may be available, for example, to people receiving Ausgleichszulage or Ergänzungszulage.
Heating support by federal state
Heizkostenzuschuss is income-dependent in every federal state where it is available. The amounts and deadlines differ:
- Salzburg: a one-off 250 euros; applications are open from 1 January to 30 September 2026.
- Lower Austria: a one-off 150 euros for the 2025/2026 heating season.
- Styria: applications must be submitted to the municipality of residence by 27 February 2026.
- Vorarlberg: applications must be submitted to the municipality of residence by 13 February 2026.
- Tyrol: no longer available since 30 September 2025.
- Upper Austria: the details for 2026 were not yet known.
In Carinthia, support may also be available for operating and heating costs in addition to Wohnbeihilfe. Eligibility depends on income and household size.
Vienna: Mobilpass and senior annual travel pass
The Mobilpass is intended for people on low incomes, including pensioners receiving Ausgleichszulage without housing support. For people receiving a minimum pension, it may be valid for up to five years.
Conditions include being an adult, having your main residence in Vienna, holding Austrian or equivalent citizenship, and having total income that does not exceed the Ausgleichszulage threshold.
The Mobilpass provides access to discounted VHS courses, Sozialmarkt shops and swimming pools, a cheaper annual library ticket, a 50 percent discount on one dog tax, and discounted Wiener Linien tickets.
Without a Mobilpass, the Wiener Linien senior annual pass costs 294 euros from age 65. City swimming pools offer discounts over 65, and people over 60 can take part in the summer holiday promotion, Sommerfrische.
Upper Austria and Styria
Upper Austria
In Upper Austria, low-income pensioners over 60 may receive support for holidays or medical treatment. This is generally half of the cost, with a minimum of 70,95 euros and a maximum of 106,43 euros per week and person, for a maximum of two weeks per year. The application must be submitted no later than three months after the trip.
- In Linz, the Aktivpass can be requested with net income below 1601 euros per month in 2026.
- In Wels, people over 60 pay 13 euros per year and receive vouchers worth approximately 200 euros; the pass is free with Ausgleichszulage.
- The emergency call system, Rufhilfe, costs 29,70 euros per month.
Styria
In Styria, except Graz, people over 60 may receive free accommodation and meals at selected restaurants if household net income is no more than 1547,62 euros for a single person or 2323,07 euros for a couple. In Graz, the Senior-Card is available from age 55.
Other federal states at a glance
- Carinthia: senior tickets are available from Kärntner Linien from age 65; Klagenfurt offers a free 50plusCard.
- Tyrol: Innsbruck offers a senior card from age 60 or with Ausgleichszulage.
- Vorarlberg: Bregenz offers a senior card from age 60 and taxi tickets for 4,50 euros each.
