Klimabonus 2024 in Austria: Amounts and How It Was Paid

The Klimabonus 2024 was Austria’s annual climate bonus, with the payment amount depending on the level of public transport available in your place of residence. Payments began in September 2024 and were made either to a bank account or by post as a voucher.

Final Klimabonus 2024 amounts

The final amounts were announced on 30 June 2024. The basic amount was 145€, with a regional supplement determined by the location category.

Reduced or increased regional supplements

Children and young people under 18 received half of the regional supplement. People with reduced mobility always received the highest regional supplement.

When was the Klimabonus 2024 paid?

Payment of the 2024 Klimabonus began in September 2024. The first amounts had already reached bank accounts by 3 September 2024.

The payment amount depended on your registered place of residence. Earlier reports had mentioned amounts of 110€ in the capital, 150€ in larger cities, 185€ in smaller cities and 220€ in rural areas. The final amounts were higher: 145€, 195€, 245€ and 290€, depending on the category.

The Heute information that was reported on 15 May 2024 also listed the preliminary regional amounts as 290€ in rural areas, 245€ in smaller cities, 195€ in larger cities and 145€ in Vienna.

How was the Klimabonus paid?

People who regularly receive payments from the Austrian state generally did not need to submit a separate application. The Klimabonus was sent using the available payment details.

Because the Klimabonus is paid once a year, bank account details are checked on a specified date each year. In 2024, this date was 10 July. Bank details in the FinanzOnline system should therefore have been checked by that date.

Why did the amount increase?

Austria paid the Klimabonus for the third time in 2024. In 2023, the adult basic amount increased from 100€ to 110€, while the maximum amount rose from 200€ to 220€.

The payment is financed from state revenue linked to the CO2 price. A planned 38% increase in the CO2 tax meant that the 2024 Klimabonus could also increase significantly. The ÖAMTC called for higher payments of between 150 and 300€, while the climate protection ministry had to wait for the additional revenue from CO2 taxes before making the final decision.

Practical steps

  1. Check that your residence details were correct for the relevant payment period.
  2. Check your bank account to see whether the Klimabonus was transferred from September 2024.
  3. If you regularly receive money from the Austrian state, check the payment account connected to those payments.
  4. If no bank account details were available, check your post for the Klimabonus voucher.
  5. For future annual payments, keep your bank account details up to date in FinanzOnline before the specified checking date.
