Klimabonus 2023 in Austria: Amounts and Payment

Austria’s Klimabonus program continues in 2023 with a once-yearly payment. Every adult and child living in Austria receives the climate-related support, regardless of citizenship or age.

The amount depends on the person’s primary residence and the quality of local infrastructure and public transport.

2023 Klimabonus amounts

Children receive half the adult amount. People with reduced mobility receive 220 euros in every case.

Payments begin in autumn 2023 and continue until the middle of 2024.

How the Klimabonus is calculated

The Klimabonus consists of two parts: a basic amount and a regional supplement. The basic amount is 110 euros for every adult and 55 euros for every child.

The regional supplement varies according to the place of residence. It is higher in rural areas because climate-friendly transport options are more limited there.

How the Klimabonus is paid

The Klimabonus is paid automatically to people whose current bank account details are registered with the Austrian Ministry of Finance. Anyone without current bank account details receives the Klimabonus by post.

The Austrian government introduced the Klimabonus in October 2022 as part of the eco-social tax reform. The payment is intended to offset price increases resulting from the climate-damaging CO2 charge and encourage climate-friendly behaviour.

The Klimabonus and climate protection

The Klimabonus is intended to support climate protection. By helping people with transport costs, it may encourage the use of climate-friendly means of transport.

It may also encourage people to buy energy-efficient products and services, which could help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The future of the Klimabonus

According to the plans described for 2023, the Klimabonus was to continue in 2024. The amount was expected to increase in the future, with more people potentially becoming eligible for the support.

Practical steps

  1. Check your primary residence and the relevant local infrastructure category.
  2. Use the category amounts to estimate the payment for each adult and child in your household.
  3. Make sure your current bank account details are registered with the Austrian Ministry of Finance if you want the payment to be made to your bank account.
  4. If current bank account details are not registered, look out for the Klimabonus by post between autumn 2023 and the middle of 2024.
  5. For official information, visit the Klimabonus website.
