Past Conditional Sentences with wenn

In German, the past form of conditional sentences (irreale Bedingungssätze in der Vergangenheit) expresses that something could have happened differently in the past, but did not happen that way.
English often expresses this idea with “if … had …, … would have …”.
Example:
- If I had had money, I would have bought the book.
- Wenn ich Geld gehabt hätte, hätte ich das Buch gekauft.
The structure
A conditional sentence has two parts:
- Condition (wenn-clause) → Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit
- Consequence (main clause) → Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit
Formula:
👉 Wenn + subject + past participle + hätte / wäre, main clause: hätte / wäre + past participle
Word order
- In the wenn-clause, the verb combination (past participle + hätte/wäre) goes at the end of the sentence.
- In the main clause, the auxiliary verb (hätte/wäre) is in the second position, while the past participle goes at the end.
Example:
- Wenn er gekommen wäre, hätten wir gespielt.
(If he had come, we would have played.)
The order of the clauses
The two clauses can be switched:
- Wenn-clause first: separate it from the main clause with a comma.
- Main clause first: this is followed by inverted word order.
Examples:
- Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, hätte ich dir geholfen.
- Ich hätte dir geholfen, wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte.
Negation
The negative word nicht works in the same way as in other sentences: it comes before the past participle.
Examples:
- Wenn ich das nicht vergessen hätte, wäre alles gut gewesen.
– If I had not forgotten this, everything would have been fine. - Wir wären nicht zu spät gekommen, wenn wir früher losgegangen wären.
– We would not have been late if we had left earlier.
Questions
If the conditional sentence contains a question, the same rule applies as with other questions: the auxiliary verb (hätte/wäre) comes before the subject.
Examples:
- Was hättest du gemacht, wenn du Zeit gehabt hättest?
– What would you have done if you had had time? - Wärst du gekommen, wenn ich dich eingeladen hätte?
– Would you have come if I had invited you?
Common mistakes
- Using Konjunktiv II Präsens in one clause and Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit in the other creates an inconsistent sentence.
- Incorrect: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, hätte ich dir geholfen. ❌
- Correct: Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, hätte ich dir geholfen. ✅
- Using hätte incorrectly with verbs that take sein.
- Incorrect: wenn er gekommen hätte ❌
- Correct: wenn er gekommen wäre ✅

Summary
- The past conditional in a wenn-structure always uses Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit.
- In the subordinate clause, the verb goes at the end: past participle + hätte/wäre.
- In the main clause, hätte/wäre is in the second position, and the past participle is at the end.
- The two clauses can change order, but they must always be separated by a comma.
- The structure always describes a past situation that was contrary to reality.
Practical steps
- Decide whether the situation is unreal and belongs to the past.
- Form the past participle of the main verb.
- Choose hätte or wäre as the auxiliary verb.
- Put the past participle and auxiliary verb at the end of the wenn-clause.
- Use hätte/wäre in the second position of the main clause and put the past participle at the end.
- Check that both clauses use Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit and separate them with a comma.
