Climate Bonus and Energy Support in Austria in 2026

The Austrian Klimabonus is no longer paid from 2025. However, if you were entitled to the bonus for an earlier year but did not receive it, you may still claim it. This guide explains the rules for previous bonuses and the energy and climate support programmes available in 2026.
What happened to the Klimabonus?
The Klimabonus was intended to offset additional costs resulting from carbon pricing (CO2-Bepreisung). The CO2 price is paid by companies that produce or import fuel in Austria. The bonus was paid once a year from 2022.
The Klimabonus ended from 2025. If you were eligible in an earlier year, your entitlement has not disappeared. You can claim it retrospectively until December 2027, provided that you met the eligibility requirements in the relevant year.
If you could not collect the letter containing the Klimabonus by the postal deadline, use the contact form available at klimabonus.gv.at.
Who was eligible for the Klimabonus?
Every natural person was eligible if their main residence (Hauptwohnsitz) was in Austria for at least six months, or 183 days, during the relevant year. Eligibility did not depend on age or citizenship.
- People without Austrian citizenship were eligible if they met the residence requirement and were legally resident in Austria.
- People under 18 were entitled to half of the bonus.
- If the main residence changed during the year, the relevant address was the one where the person was registered for the majority of the days.
- People with reduced mobility received the basic amount and the highest regional supplement regardless of their place of residence. This required either a disabled parking permit under § 29b StVO or a specific entry in the disability pass (Behindertenpass) stating that using public transport could not reasonably be expected because of permanent reduced mobility.
How much was the Klimabonus in 2024?
Since 2023, the bonus consisted of a standard basic amount (Sockelbetrag) and a regional supplement (Regionalausgleich) based on the place of residence. Areas were classified according to factors such as public transport and infrastructure. The weaker the public transport and infrastructure, the higher the supplement.
- Category 1: Urban centre with very good public transport — 145 euros for an adult
- Category 2: Urban centre with good public transport — 195 euros (145 + 50)
- Category 3: Regional centre and surrounding area — 245 euros (145 + 100)
- Category 4: Rural municipality with basic public transport — 290 euros (145 + 145)
The exact amount was determined by the postcode of the main residence and could be checked at klimabonus.gv.at.
How was the bonus paid, and was it taxable?
No application was required. The bonus was paid automatically into a bank account if the account details were available, for example through the FinanzOnline system, or if the state already made regular payments to the person, such as a pension, care allowance or childcare payment.
Everyone else received a voucher by registered letter (RSa-Brief). The voucher could be used in shops or exchanged for cash. The half bonus for minors receiving family allowance (Familienbeihilfe) was paid into the account used for the family allowance.
For 2024, the Klimabonus was taxable if annual taxable income exceeded 66.612 euros. This corresponds roughly to 6.660 euros gross per month. The bonus did not affect eligibility for social assistance (Sozialhilfe).
If the bonus was received on the basis of an incorrect registered address or false information, it must be repaid or deducted from later bonuses.
Energy and climate support available in 2026
Geräte-Retter-Prämie
The Geräte-Retter-Prämie replaced the former Reparaturbonus. Since 12 January 2026, people resident in Austria can apply for a voucher (Bon) at geraete-retter-praemie.at for the repair, servicing or maintenance of household electrical and electronic devices.
- Repair, servicing or maintenance: 50% of the gross cost, up to a maximum of 130 euros
- Cost estimate (Kostenvoranschlag): up to 30 euros
For example, an eligible repair costing 160 euros gross would receive 80 euros in support. For a cost of 300 euros, the maximum support is 130 euros.
The voucher must be redeemed at a partner service centre within three weeks. You pay the invoice in full first, and the support is then transferred to the specified bank account. The support is available only for an eligible device that you own; warranty repairs are excluded.
Solar panels and battery storage: EAG-Investitionsförderung
A one-off investment grant is available for installing or expanding a grid-connected solar system during specified application periods (Fördercall). The final 2026 application period is from 8 October to 22 October.
- Category A: up to 10 kWp — 150 euros/kWp
- Category B: between 10 and 20 kWp — 140 euros/kWp
- Storage: 150 euros/kWh
Sanierungsoffensive 2026
The funding available for replacing fossil-fuel heating systems (Kesseltausch) has been exhausted, so new registrations are no longer possible. Registrations and applications already submitted will continue to be processed.
The insulation grant (Sanierungsbonus) has not accepted applications since 2 February 2026.
Energy advice
Every Austrian federal province has an energy advice service (Energieberatung), which is free in many locations. The provinces also offer their own support programmes, for example for renovations or solar systems.
