School Holidays and Public Holidays in Austria in the 2026/2027 School Year

If your child attends school in Austria, the school calendar is useful when planning family activities, travel and annual leave. The 2026/2027 Ferienkalender includes nationwide school breaks as well as semester and summer holidays that vary by federal state.

Which schools do these holidays apply to?

The calendar applies to state mittlere und höhere Schulen and private secondary schools with Öffentlichkeitsrecht. Volksschule, Neue Mittelschule, special schools, Berufsschule and Polytechnische Schule generally follow the same holidays.

Tourism-focused schools may have different holiday dates. If you are unsure which type of school your child attends, check the school’s own calendar.

Summer school: what is Sommerschule?

During the final two weeks of the summer holidays, free Sommerschule is available at selected schools throughout Austria. Its purpose is to help students catch up and receive targeted support, with a particular focus on language development.

The subjects depend on the school level:

From 2026, participation is compulsory for außerordentliche Schüler attending Deutschförderklassen. The school administration registers them automatically, and parents receive an information letter. Voluntary participation requires the application form provided by the school.

Statutory public holidays during the school year

In addition to school holidays, the following gesetzliche Feiertage fall within the school year:

Federal-state patron saint holidays, known as Landespatron holidays, are not included in the calendar.

University holidays follow a different system

At universities, the academic year starts on October 1 and ends on September 30 of the following year. The winter semester starts on October 1, while the summer semester starts on March 1. The summer break generally lasts three months: July, August and September.

Each university sets its own Christmas, semester and Easter holidays. Additional days off may include the day before and after Pentecost, November 2, a federal-state patron saint day and a day designated by the rector, known as Rektorstag.
