Long weekends and bridge days in 2027
A bridge day, known in Austria as a Fenstertag, is a working day between two days off. These are the main opportunities for extending your time off:
- January 1–3: New Year's Day falls on a Friday, creating a three-day weekend.
- January 6: Taking two days of annual leave, either Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday, creates five consecutive days off.
- March 27–29: Easter creates a three-day weekend. Good Friday is not a statutory public holiday.
- May 6–9: Ascension Day falls on Thursday. Taking Friday, May 7, off creates four consecutive days off.
- May 15–17: Whit weekend creates a three-day weekend.
- May 27–30: Corpus Christi falls on Thursday. Taking Friday, May 28, off creates four consecutive days off.
- October 23–26: National Day falls on Tuesday, so Monday, October 25, can be used as a bridge day.
- October 30–November 1: All Saints' Day falls on Monday, creating a three-day weekend.
- December 8: The holiday falls on a Wednesday, without a natural bridge day.
Regional holidays in 2027: Landespatron days
Each Bundesland has a patron saint, known as the Landespatron. These are not general statutory public holidays. Most employees are expected to work, while schools are closed and some public offices may be closed.
- St. Joseph (Josef): March 19, 2027, Friday — Kärnten, Steiermark, Tirol, Vorarlberg
- St. Florian (Florian): May 4, 2027, Tuesday — Oberösterreich
- St. Rupert (Rupert): September 24, 2027, Friday — Salzburg
- Referendum Day (Tag der Volksabstimmung): October 10, 2027, Sunday — Kärnten
- St. Martin (Martin): November 11, 2027, Thursday — Burgenland
- St. Leopold (Leopold): November 15, 2027, Monday — Wien, Niederösterreich
All Souls' Day (Allerseelen), November 2, 2027, Tuesday, is also not a statutory public holiday. However, under the school legislation, it is a school holiday in every Bundesland.
Good Friday, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve
Good Friday
Good Friday (March 26, 2027) is not a public holiday in Austria. Since 2019, everyone may instead choose one annual “personal holiday” (persönlicher Feiertag) using a day of their annual leave. This must be notified to the employer in writing at least three months in advance.
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve (December 24 and 31, 2027, both Friday) are ordinary working days under the law. Many collective agreements provide for an earlier end to work on these dates, so check your own agreement.
December 8
December 8 is a public holiday, but shops may open when it falls on a weekday. Shop employees may refuse to work that day without giving a reason. In 2027, December 8 falls on a Wednesday, so shops may be open.
