Austrian Family Allowance – Familienbeihilfe Information and 2025 Amounts

In Austria, parents raising children, regardless of their employment or income, are entitled to family allowance.

Until what age is Austrian family allowance provided?

By default, family allowance is provided until the child is 19 years old. If the child is still studying (higher education, vocational training, further education, etc.), it is provided until a maximum of 24 years of age. The child’s income does not count until the age of 19; from 20 years old, their total taxable income must not exceed 15,000 euros per year. What is considered taxable income for family allowance purposes is detailed in separate regulations.

Family allowance cannot be withdrawn in cash, but can only be transferred to a bank account.

When raising 3 or more children, parents are also entitled to the Mehrkindzuschlag (multiple child supplement), you can find more information about this at the bottom of the article.

Who is Eligible for Family Allowance in Austria?

Austrian family allowance is available to parents who:

  • have an employment or entrepreneurial relationship in Austria
  • their child lives with them in the same household, or they provide the majority of support for the child if neither parent is part of the household
  • by default, the family allowance goes to the mother, but the father can request to receive it
  • after the child turns 19, the allowance continues only if the child is studying (and in a few additional, special cases)
  • in case of child disability, the family allowance can be provided until the age of 25, or based on individual assessment, even longer

Do You Need to Apply for Austrian Family Allowance? Yes for Hungarians

Family allowance can always be requested, but only retroactively for up to five years, calculated from the month of application. The competent authority is the Finanzamt Austria.

Since May 1, 2015, family allowance has been automatic for every child born in Austria. The child’s data and parents’ personal identification information are recorded in the Central Personal Registry (ZPR) by the registry office. This data is transferred to the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMF), which operates the ZPR, and then forwarded to the Financial Administration. The Financial Administration automatically checks the conditions and information for family allowance based on the electronic data.

If yes, parents have no further tasks to do, they do not need to submit a family allowance request or contact the relevant tax office. The Tax Office will send them an informative letter notifying them of their eligibility for child benefits. At the same time, the amount of family allowance will be transferred to their bank account.

If the Financial Office is missing certain information, such as bank account number (IBAN, BIC), parents will be asked to provide the missing data and respond to any unresolved questions. In this case, there is no need to submit a family allowance application; it is sufficient to simply return the informative letter with the responses and supporting documents.

If parents have further questions after receiving the informational letter, they can contact the Finanzamt Info Center.

Family Allowance Application for non-Austrians

In all other cases, such as when someone moves from Hungary to Austria or takes up work in Austria, it is necessary to submit an application for family allowance. The application for family allowance can be submitted electronically through FinanzOnline to the local Finanzamt. The required forms can be obtained online.

Family allowance can essentially only be claimed by parents for adult children, as they are primarily entitled to the benefit. Children can claim family allowance independently only if they no longer live in the same household as their parents and the parents have not verifiably fulfilled their maintenance obligations.

The details of the transfer always show what the amount contains, for example, the combined amount of Familienbeihilfe and Kindenabsetzbetrag is visible:

The special feature of the August payment is that children between 6 and 15 years old will also receive the Schulstartgeld school start support, which amounts to 116.10 euros per child. This support will be paid together with the family allowance, so no separate application is required.
